I do not accept insurance for couples or family counseling because insurance uses a medical model for billing. That means one partner needs a diagnosis and the treatment has to support that diagnosis, which is counter to my approach in couples counseling.

Some insurance plans however will reimburse out of network providers though and I can provide a bill at the end of each month for you to submit to them. In fact, ‍If you have a PPO plan, you may be eligible to get 60-80% of each session reimbursed after you meet your deductible. And you can always use your HSA benefits to pay for therapy.

That said, I do accept some insurance plans for individual therapy which varies by state. Feel free to inquire, I’m happy to check.

To determine if you have mental health coverage through your insurance carrier, the first thing you should do is call them. Check your coverage carefully and make sure you understand their answers.  Some questions you ask include the following:

  • What are my mental health benefits?

  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

  • How many therapy sessions does my plan cover?

  • How much does my insurance pay for an out-of-network provider?

  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?
